Ok, we know the famous ones, but how about the local gems?
I nominate Joe Donnelly from Bloomington, IN:) He was the nei, saxophone, and clarinet player for Salaam when I was a member, and until the end before they broke up. He wasn't an original member, but when Sylvain Carton left, he stepped up to the plate :) He's an awesome musician, but he's also a teacher. He used to teach for an inner city school in Indianapolis, and he brought a lot of light to those underpriveledged kids :) He's also a father, and a GREAT one at that! Not only does he play well, and from the heart, but he has his B.A. in Music from Indiana University, not a small feat, as they are all classically trained! Joe also is a nice guy, too; not full of himself at all. We love you, Joe!
Anyone else?

but of course, I've also gotta nominate Mr. Oracle - not only is he an awesome guitarist, but also one hell of a drummer! :)

Re: Who is your favorite local musician?
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 11:17 AMI love just about anyone with talent, skill, dedication, that brings their musical interpretation forward to share. So, I can't choose a favorite, but I am thrilled to laud some I am lucky to hear frequently: the Americanistan Band (Eugene, OR), Brothers of the Baladi and Arabesque (two projects by Michael Beach, Portland, OR), Mediterranean Raqsband (www.raqsband.com - new musicians but really growing rapidly in skill), and Helmi (sp?) (Portland, OR). Live music and open dance -- it's simply the best!
James
