Lamma Bada Yata Thanna lyrics?

topic posted Wed, March 22, 2006 - 2:42 PM by  Katya
OK, Shira.net used to have it on her site, but now it's gone! Help! I can't seem to find it anywhere else on the net, either.

Does anyone have a copy of these lyrics? If so, can you please post them here?

Thanks!!!!

      Thanks, sweetie; I wish they were translated, tho!!! I know some of it, but I want to show my students, as we are working on this song.

      I'll just have one of my Arabic speaking friends help me!

      Thanks!

          Here's a couple-three translations; still interested to see whatever else someone comes up with...
          --------------------------------------------------------------
          Translation is by Chris Vancil:

          When she started to walk with a swinging gait
          Her beauty amazed me

          I have become prisoner of her eyes
          Her stem folded as she bent

          O my promise, O my perplexity
          Who can answer my complaint
          About love and suffering
          But the beautiful one?

          ----------------------------------------------------------------
          The lyrics are listed in Hamza EL Din's album
          _Eclipse_ as follows:

          When the gossamer nymph appears,
          My beloved's beauty drives me to distraction;
          Surrender
          Surrender
          When I am enraptured by a glimpse,
          My beloved's beauty is a tender branch caught by the breeze;
          Surrender
          Surrender
          Oh my destiny, my perplexity,
          No one can comfort me in my misery,
          In my lamenting and suffering for love,
          But for the one in the beautiful mirage;
          My beloved's beauty drives me to distraction,
          Surrender
          Surrender

          ----------------------------------------------------------------

          translation is by Mimi Spencer & M. Metal:

          When he (she) appeared, undulating, ah! mercy!
          My love's beauty charmed us.

          With a look, a wink, the lover captivated us;
          When the brach swayed gracefully, we were devastated.

          My promise - O my puzzlement!
          Who can sympathize with my complaint of love,
          Except the King of beauty?

                  You are very welcome! I love Tribe! This tribe is fabulous too. I didn't know who Randa or Dandesh were, but after reading your exchange with Aziyade, and being super nosey again, I find some video footage and I am now a big fan of Dandesh! Again I will share my links:

                    Hey hon; I'll have to look at the videos later, it was taking a long time to load. Thanks for the link!

                    Did you listen to the radio program about Lamma Bada? They said it was Moorish, and that's wrong! It is Andalusian, and is an Arabic song that was brought there by the Umayyad family when they were dethroned by the Abbasis of Saudi Arabia in the 7th century. The Umayyad's fled to Granada, and THEN the Moors came later in 711. According to my Egyptian teacher, Faten, who is also an accomplished Flamenco dancer and has studied in Spain for over 30 years, the history is a little different than what the books say. She says that the Umayyad's hired Turkish musicians and dancers, as their home was in Damasus, Syria. So, this song is based on what those artists created, and it must have a Turkish feel to it. This is different than what you will read in the history books, but she has actually been to Granada several times, and the stories that people tell are usually in contrast to what the books say.
