Help! Resources needed for Transcription and Analysis Project

Ok everyone, I need to pick your brains! I have a solo project to do for my Ethnomusicology Transcription and and Analysis course; I have chosen a 1 min. video clip of Randa Kamel. She is doing a taqsim with nei, and the beginning of it is a a Baladi taqsim with rhythm, then she switches to a pure classical taqsim without rhythym. Here's the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQN2fZUzE14

Any thoughts on resources or methods of transcription? I will probably use Western Notation in the form of sheetmusic for the music part, and then writing out choreography for the dance. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated!

Dear Friends,

The 8th Middle Eastern Gala is 1 day away, and we are really looking forward to it! Here are some more details about the event.

See you there!

Dena El Saffar,

Salaam

Press Release:

The 8th Annual Middle Eastern Gala hosted by Salaam takes place at 7:00 pm onSaturday, October 27th at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington, IN. The Middle Eastern Gala is a celebration of the Middle Eastern performing arts: Music, Song, Dance, and of course, Food! It is a time for Bloomington to celebrate its unique mix of worldliness, respect for cultural diversity, and vision for a peaceful world. Salaam is the Arabic word for Peace, and several selections in this year's Gala will deliver the message: "Salaam". Though not an official part of "Be Peaceful Bloomington", which is the theme for the month of October, the timing is serendipitous; what a perfect way to end a week spent with the Dalai Lama!

Salaam was founded in 1993 with the mission of presenting beautiful renditions of Middle Eastern Classics as well as innovative musical ideas. Salaam www.salaamband.com specializes in being diverse in Time and Place: the repertoire spans the ancient and the modern, Classical and Folk music, and comes from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and more. The show on the 27th of October will include a Syrian Muwashah, Ottoman Court Music, Dance music from Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon, Iraqi Maqam, songs by 'Abdel Halim Hafez, Fairuz, and original compositions by Dena El Saffar and Hakan Toker*!

Although Salaam is based in Bloomington, the majority of their performances take place in other parts of the country. Salaam likes to create a big show for Bloomington "because we love our hometown", says bandleader Dena El Saffar. "To make it extra special, we always invite guest singers and dancers. " This year, Amir ElSaffar and Gaida Hinnawi, both from New York City, will be the featured vocalists. Amir, www.myspace.com/amirelsaffar Dena's brother, specializes in Iraqi music and has a new release on Pi Recordings label entitled Two Rivers. He has caught the attention of such publications as the New York Times, BBC world News, and has performed in Latin America, Europe and the Middle East as well as in the U.S. Gaida, www.myspace.com/gaidamusic a native of Damascus, Syria is one of the leading Arab female vocalists on the scene in North America. She specializes in Mawwal (vocal improvisation) and the music of Fairouz and Sabah Fakhri.

This year three Raqs Sharqi dancers will be featured: Katya Faris of Bloomington, www.myspace.com/katyafaris who has hosted several Middle Eastern Dance events in Bloomington, is in demand all over the country, and is an aspiring scholar in the field of Ethnomusicology here at IUB; and Alexandria, www.myspace.com/alexandriabellydancer, one of the top-call raqs sharqi performers in the Chicago area. Originally from Detroit, she has performed in Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, and other countries.

This Feast for the Senses also includes Middle Eastern food available for purchase in the lobby. The food will be prepared by Tenth Street International Market and Café et Crepe. The doors will open at 6:00 pm, an hour before show time, so come early and bring your appetite!

*It should be noted that band member Hakan Toker will be missed at the Gala, as he is serving mandatory time in the Turkish military. We wish him luck and safety!

It's all about the music, right?? What do you dance for?

I've seen a couple other posts about snobby bellydancers, and I must say, it's all about the music, right???

For me, I must LOVE the music in order to dance to it. Which is why tribal bores me to tears. But if that's your cup of tea, great! No judgement here. But there is bad dancing in every sphere, and that is when I get snobby. When I see people NOT following the music. They should know better, and the fact that they don't is what pisses me off that they're on stage in the first place. I mean, in Flamenco, Indian Classical, etc., there are rules, and no one is allowed on stage until they are ready. Why is BD so different??? I don't think we'll get respect until we have some standardization.

Who came first, the dance or the music? I guess that is the question.

For me, it's the music. Sorry, I'm a Cancerian, so I need to reflect!!!

Anyone, anyone???

visual harmony

Http://www.harmonychannel.com (comcast, under music category)

Visual Music and Harmony Channel

Harmony Channel is a visual music television network. However, there are many definitions of visual music. In order to guide program development, we created the following working definition of visual music:

Visual Music is an art form with a primary objective of intentionally activating the mind’s ability to fuse visuals and music into a “synaesthetic experience” - not synaesthesia in the clinical sense, but the experience of something more than either the music or visuals alone could deliver.

This is a broad definition resulting in many “flavors” of visual music. For instance, the visual music label belongs to films such as Baraka, Chronos, the Koyaanisqatsi trilogy, and others that substantially rely upon the synaesthesia effect rather than narrative to carry the film. Such films may be purely non-representational (abstract) – leaning towards the traditional definition of visual music – or a representational live-action film that relies almost solely on the synaesthesia effect (i.e. non-narrative). While Disney’s Fantasia has a narrative thread, the non-narrative synaesthetic experiences largely carries the film, so we consider this film to generally fall within our broader definition of the visual music genre.

While many Hollywood films utilize visual music effects, its use is secondary in support of a narrative (drama, action, horror, etc.), so most films do not fit our definition of a visual music art piece. Films such as The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and March of the Penguins make heavy use of visual music devices, but the visual music devices are secondary to the story being told.

There are, of course, alternate and historical definitions of visual music as pointed out in Cindy Keefer’s VM Introduction, including silent visuals that mimic musical properties including rhythm and counterpoint. Some traditional visual music pieces also use avant garde music that stretches common definitions of music altogether.

Journey into your Own Mind

Visual music art recognizes that the synaesthetic effect is entertaining in its own right and requires nothing more to support it. In this sense, abstract (non-representational) visual music might be thought of as “pure” visual music, since it is unfettered by recognizable forms – i.e. concerts, narrative, character animation, visual storytelling and other devices that are not essential to the synaesthetic experience. Other examples of “pure” visual music include colored water fountains, synchronized musical fireworks performances, and abstract laser light shows.

Art forms that incorporate principles of visual music (but that include other artistic elements, as well) include opera, ballet and nearly all forms of dance, many live musical performances, and musicals. Even synchronized swimming incorporates principles of visual music.

How is it possible that visual music takes you on a compelling journey without representational imagery? In a sense, the journey is within your own mind. The brain is a powerful correlator and pattern recognizer, and is constantly seeking correlations between visual and auditory stimuli. Some of the best visual music teases the brain with synchronicities between sight and sound, some obvious, some more hidden. The brain is also constantly seeking patterns in visual stimuli, even random noise. Some of the best visual music also teases the brain’s need to find images in abstract imagery. The result is an entertaining dance provided by your brain’s attempts to interpret the visual music imagery flooding your senses.

Harmony’s Visual Music Spectrum

Harmony Channel presents a broad spectrum of Visual Music. We embrace a wide range of visual and musical genres, including both representational (edited cinematography and animation) and non-representational visuals (lumia, kaleidoscopic effects and abstract computer graphics). At the same time, Harmony content stands alone without the use of storytelling, personality worship or other contextual devices typically found in popular media, thereby warranting the visual music label. Harmony Channel honors the visual music moniker by equally crediting the visual artist (director) and musical artist (composer).

While Harmony Channel respects the entire field of visual music and its many talented artists, we also must be true to the Harmony Channel brand. For this reason, we currently limit our selections to those pieces that support the positive, mood-elevating effects promised by Harmony’s seven MoodZones. There is a substantial body of visual music works that do not fit into one of our seven “flavors.” For this reason, we some day hope to create a vintage visual music category, as well as an avant garde category, to better support the history and future development of visual music art.

My most intense dance experiences have been with live music. There are some truly amazing musicians out there, and there is nothing like dancing with live music!

A few of my favorites famous ones are:

-Omar Faruk Tekbilek (such a nice family guy, too! Love his wife!)
-Hossam Ramzy (Bellydance Big Daddy! He's got a great wife, Serena, too!)
-Joe Zeytoonian (met him at the Mendocino Camp; sincere heart!)
-Latif Bolat (taught me so much more than just music...the business side is what I learned from him!)
-Souhail Kasper (he's so unpredictable when he plays for dancers!)
-Ali Jihad Racy (a Master, what can I say...)
-Amir Sofi (great new drummer, and easy on the eyes, too! ;-) )

Hi,
I am a beginner and was just browsing the post about the gilded serpent review of Visual Melodies. I thought it would be very useful for a beginner like me.

I saw that "women's movement" was mentioned, but I am not familiar with that term. It seemed (from what I could understand) that women's movement was preferred by some dancers over a folkloric movement. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Could someone please explain it to me?

Contraction and Release: The Path to Ecstasy

Have you guys ever read "Maps to Ecstasy" by Gabrielle Roth? Or, the sequel, "Sweat Your Prayers"? To me, this is the roadmap for all dance on how to achieve trance. It's all about contaction and release of energy, and this is what I first studied with the Martha Graham technique. Discovering the "center" of energy, or the solar plexus, through Graham technique is what led me to bellydance.

I was kinda observing myself from afar when I was practicing today; I was improving and I found my energy constantly going from tight to loose in my dancing. When I first find new music, I just dance improv until I hit a pattern. I find my patterns tend to employ this contaction/release theory. Anyone else?

Souhail Kaspar Workshop in DC 11/5&6

I saw this on Brandon's Bellydance Nation tribe, and decided it was so awesome, and right up this tribe's alley, that I had to post it here!

This instruction of his is "straight from the horse's mouth". Souhail has an incredibly sharp mind, and a sharp tongue, too; he doesn't hold anything back in his teaching or playing!

From: "heyokadancer" <HEYOKADANCER@YAHOO.COM>
Subject: Souhail Kaspar Workshops & Performances

I just wanted to post a more detailed description of Souhail's
Rhythm & Movement workshop that explains the topics covered. Also,
I've updated my website so that you can register now on
the "Shopping" Page. Only thing is you have to go to the Booking
page to find the "Shopping" link (look at the menu on the lefthand
side). Don't worry, I'm going to have that fixed asap! ALso, don't
wait to order your tickets for the Friday night performance, I've
already sold several, and am advertising to the general public and
media as well. I've been told this is John's first performance in
Washington, DC and he's been around for a long time. Who know if he
will come again! SO don't miss your chance!

Here's a detailed description of what's covered in the workshops:

Rhythm & Movement (November 5 & 6): Two Day Workshop:
Lecture Material
>Concepts of Rhythm & Movement
>Raqs al-Sharqi history and development
>Cultural dos and don'ts:
1. When performing different venues (concert, stage, cabaret)
2. For costuming, attitude, tips
3. Interacting with musicians, audience
4. How to book your gig
>Rhythm instruction:
1. The language of rhythms: downbeats/accents/silence
2. What is a Dum, tec, Pop,run, roll, etc.
3. Where on the body are these tones represented
>Melody Instruction
1. Where on the body are the instruments represented
2. The movements that represent each instrument
3. Takasims (solo melodic improvisation)
> Music Instruction
1. The relationship between the melody and the rhythm
2. The relationship between the music and the dancer
Movement Material
>Warm up
1. Specificity to movements being taught
2. Interesting ideas from Egyptian school of performing arts
> Exploration of walking and the relationship to rhythms
> Concepts for showing the downbeats & accents on the body
> Specific Stance Position for Raqs al-Sharqi
> Showing the downbeats & accents in place and in walking
> Rhythm Movement Instruction:
1. Kunga
2. Maksoum
3. Wahda Kabirah
4. Sai' idi
> Melody Instruction
1. Takasims with Wahda Kabirah

NOTE: Workshop content, in part, is determined by the level and
knowledge of the participants. It is possible that more information
will be covered.

It is important for the dancers to know that the information given
in this workshop will provide them with the basics needed for
developing a drum solo. Without these basics the soloist will not be
able to show the rhythms that the drummer is playing.
Additionally, it provides a foundation for dancing in general; the
dancer will understand how to create on the spot improvisations to
music whether it is on tape or LIVE!

Drum Workshops:
Beginner Drum:
Stretch Exercises
for basic drum tones: Dum, Rt. & Lt. hand Tecs
Intro. to rhyhms: Taiir, Waltz, Beladi
Int./Adv Drum:
Stretch Exercises
Review of Foundations and Fundamentals as needed
Warm up
Drills for speed
Rhythm instruction (rhythms to be determined by Souhail at the time
of the class)
Technique Instruction (to be determined by Souhail at the time of
the class)

Thanks,
Kostana
You will find info. there on how to register for Souhail's workshops
or buy tickets for the performance.

I am researching the "ayoub" rhythm. Can anybody tell me anything about this? I have bits and pieces of info, but nothing concrete about where it came from, the story behind it.

Also, what is the correct way to dance to this in an Arabic raqs sharki composition? I have seen lots of different things.

Thanks!

Gilded Serpent Review of Visual Melodies DVD!

Hey everyone; check this out:

http://www.gildedserpent.com/art30/debbieramzydvd.htm

A very thorough and insightful review. I agree with her about 90%. I would say that even though Serena keeps the technique repetoire to the interm. level, the "formula" is so clear in these pieces, it would be hard for beginners to see what she is doing if she used more advanced technique. What she is doing is Bellydance 101 as far as I'm concerned; if you don't understand what she is doing, then you have no foundation to understanding and interpreting music, no matter how many fancy moves you put in it!

I think that in the next DVD they do, they should definitely do a more complicated melody, and perhaps a taqsim or two.

This format of DVD can really revolutionize how bellydancers think about their dance, and their relationship to music. It seems these days that our dance is tending more towards sexual inuendo in the Orientale style, and I think this style and way of thinking about the dance is so much healthier, and truer to the music and folklore of the dance. I do think that Serena is the modern version of Naima Akef in that she adds folkloric movement along with ballet to her choreographies, and doesn't do just "women's movement". That is the style I have been taught in with Faten, so I am pleased that Serena comes from the same "dance lineage" in her thinking.

OK, read the review and let us know what you think!
Who is your favorite local musician?

Ok, we know the famous ones, but how about the local gems?

I nominate Joe Donnelly from Bloomington, IN:) He was the nei, saxophone, and clarinet player for Salaam when I was a member, and until the end before they broke up. He wasn't an original member, but when Sylvain Carton left, he stepped up to the plate :) He's an awesome musician, but he's also a teacher. He used to teach for an inner city school in Indianapolis, and he brought a lot of light to those underpriveledged kids :) He's also a father, and a GREAT one at that! Not only does he play well, and from the heart, but he has his B.A. in Music from Indiana University, not a small feat, as they are all classically trained! Joe also is a nice guy, too; not full of himself at all. We love you, Joe!

Anyone else?

I love Abdel Halim Hafez. Why? Well, because his melodies make me get up and dance before I even can identify what song it is...it's like, it pushes me up and I can't sit down! I use the Hafez "cocktail" song on Amir Sofi's new album, Millenium, and I love it!!!

*Goosebump Test*-Who gives 'em to you and why?

I have always found that the dancers that give me goosebumps, or make me cry, are the ones I truly think are great. I believe the reason why they make me feel this way is because they are totally in sinc with the music, and when that happens, the floodgates of emotion are opened in the brain and body.

Some people who have passed this "goosebump test" for me are:

Amani of Lebanon
Dina of Cairo
Eva Cernik
Faten Ali Munger
Suhaila Salimpour
Jasmin Jahal
Samara of NYC
Virginia of Miami
Laila Gamal
Mona Al Said
Nadia Gamal
Dalia Carella
Serena Ramzy
Hadia of Canada
Samia Gamal

By no means in any order, either...

Who does this for you, and why do you think it is?

Hi; I'm researching the musical differences between Egyptian and Lebanese Raqs Sharki melodies. I know that in Lebanese style there is a greater use of floor space, because the orchestra is playing together as a whole more. The phrasing also tends to be three times one way, then the fourth a different way. Also it seems that sometimes in Lebanese melodies the last four counts may be chopped off a bar at the end of a section.

Anyone?

Maqam as Medicine

HI; this is a subject that I've been interested in awhile, but have only met a few people who knew anything about it.

I know in Sufi orders that utilize music for healing, the Sheikh prescribes different maqams like a doctor would prescribe prescription drugs. Latif Bolat, a Turkish musician, taught me the following:

Nihavendt: Humility
Hicaz: Sensuality
Rast: a sense of "Perspective"

Okay, there are a LOT of maqams, and so I am trying to make a list of what goes with what. Does anybody know anything about this?

Where are the pictures from? They look like Persian miniatures but not really the medieval Persian Miniatures. The patterns are pretty as well- are they those things I can't remember the name of which one stares into forever and sees the universe and stuff like that? Thanks! Sarah

Salaam Aleykum!

Hello everyone! I decided to create this tribe to talk about music for dancers. I think it is so important to our art form, and I have found through my teaching that it is essential to teach the music with the dance.

I recently bought the new "Visual Melodies" DVD by Hossam and Serena Ramzy, and it has taught me so much about phrasing. This is something that my Egyptian teacher, Faten, has taught me. This is where the poetry happens.

I have always been aware of matching my dance to the music, as I was lucky enough to be able to work with live musicians at an early age, . However, it is a new concept for some of the new generation of bellydancers, so I thought this would be a good place to discuss music for dancers.

Any questions, bring them on!

Love...Katya xoxo
